During his 38-year career as a sportscaster on radio and television, Kenneth R. Coleman (April 22, 1925 – August 21, 2003) was known as “Kenny R.” (1952-1989). Coleman, a native of Quincy, Massachusetts, began his broadcasting career with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns (1952-1965), calling play-by-play for every touchdown scored by Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown throughout his tenure with the franchise. Also in Cleveland, he started his Major League Baseball broadcasting career, calling Cleveland Indians games on television for a total of 10 seasons (1954-1963). Coleman called the Indians’ record-setting 111-win season, as well as their World Series defeat to the New York Giants, during his first season with the organisation. Coleman was hired by the Boston Red Sox in 1965 to take over for Curt Gowdy as the team’s manager. He worked for NBC television and radio, where he aired the 1967 World Series, in which the Red Sox were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals. Coleman was a member of the Cincinnati Reds’ television broadcast team from 1975 through 1978. Coleman worked as a college football broadcaster for a variety of teams, including Ohio State, Harvard, and Boston University. Among his broadcasting credits was the 1968 Harvard-Yale football game, which will be remembered for the remarkable Harvard comeback from a 16-point hole to tie Yale at 29-29. He was also the play-by-play announcer for the 1968 Harvard-Yale basketball game. In addition, he called NFL games for NBC in the early 1970s, and later in his career, he called basketball games for Connecticut and Fairfield for the Connecticut Public Television network.

 Having been dismissed from his radio station in 1978 for failing to obey the demands of advertisers, Coleman went to Boston in 1979 to resume his radio career with Ned Martin and Jim Woods. He broadcast the Red Sox’ 1986 World Series defeat to the New York Mets as well as two Red Sox American League Championship Series games (1986 and 1988). The Red Sox radio booth remained in Coleman’s possession until his retirement in 1989. Aside from that, he authored books on sportscasting and was a founding member of both the Red Sox Booster Club and the BoSox Club, as well as being heavily engaged with the Jimmy Fund, which raises money for cancer research. To the day of his death, he maintained a regular pattern of swimming in the Atlantic Ocean as frequently as he could through the late fall and into the first days of spring. He was the father of the late Cleveland sports and newscaster Casey Coleman, who died in 2006 from pancreatic cancer. Casey Coleman was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. A year after being inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, Coleman died of natural causes on May 18, 2000, when he was 75. He passed away in Plymouth, Massachusetts, three years later, at the age of 78. Coleman and Dick Stockton shared play-by-play responsibilities for the New England Patriots’ preseason games in 1972, when there were no colour commentators on the broadcast.
