She is the author of the advice column Dear Abby, which she started in 2002. “Dear Abby” was established by Pauline Phillips and her husband, Morton Phillips, in 1956. She is the daughter of Pauline Phillips and Morton Phillips. Pauline identified Jeanne as the co-creator of Dear Abby in a Dear Abby piece that appeared on December 12, 2000. They started to collaborate on the column under the byline Abigail Van Buren, and both were photographed with the column. When the Phillips family announced that Pauline had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in August 2002, Jeanne formally took on the role of Dear Abby for the first time. Under the pen name “Abigail Van Buren,” Jeanne continues to publish her work. Dear Abby, written by Jeanne Phillips, is syndicated in over 1,400 newspapers throughout the United States, with a total circulation of more than 110 million copies.
