From 1994 to 2007, Donaghy served as a professional basketball referee for the National Basketball Association (NBA). Donaghy was born on January 7, 1967, and was a member of the NBA’s official referees’ staff for 13 seasons. Donaghy officiated in 772 regular season games and 20 postseason games during his 10-year NBA tenure. Donald Donaghy resigned from the National Football League on July 9, 2007, before reports of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into allegations that he placed bets on games that he officiated during his last two seasons, as well as that he made calls that affected the point spread in those games, surfaced. During the inquiry, Donaghy was charged with two federal felonies, which he pleaded guilt to on August 15, 2007. However, if it is proven that he purposefully miscalled specific games, he may be subject to further penalties at the federal and state levels. On July 29, 2008, Donaghy was found guilty and sentenced to 15 months in federal prison. He was sentenced to 11 months in a federal prison camp in Pensacola, Florida, with the intent of serving the rest of his sentence in a halfway house. However, he was returned to jail in August for breaching his release conditions. He was freed from prison on November 4, 2009, after completing the remainder of his term.
